Helping Honduras: Emergency Funds After Disaster

In November 2024, Tropical Storm Sara moved through Honduras and Guatemala, devastating miles of farmland. This path of devastation cut directly through the communities where Heifer International has been working for years to bolster local agriculture. Significant losses of beehives, corn, beans and livestock have been reported, causing the Heifer International team to go into crisis mode.

Heifer Honduras is not a humanitarian aid agency, but they were not just going to leave the farmers they support in crisis. Mobilizing quickly, Heifer Honduras began putting together a plan to bring relief to the communities they have become tied to.

One of the first steps was putting in calls for emergency funds to acquire and transport aid to a region with devastated infrastructure. The Deena Jo Heide-Diesslin Foundation was honored to be able to answer one of those calls with an emergency allocation to Heifer Honduras. Heifer’s work with family farmers around the world has directly impacted thousands of women and created communities where they can thrive, so it was a no-brainer to use the DJHD Foundation’s small emergency fund to aid in restoring those communities.

But our small fund is not enough to restore all the infrastructure that is desperately needed. In this giving season, we are asking you to give what you can to build back the farms devastated by Tropical Storm Sara.
